This is a last day prophecy. You have to understand that in this prophecy it has some fulfillment, but I don’t believe it ended there. This is the period of four hundred years of silence. In Matthew 11:14 it says, “And if you are willing to receive and accept it, John himself is Elijah who was to come before the kingdom.” It’s talking about the spirit of Elijah. The spirit himself did not come after a thousand years. Elijah did not come. That’s the spirit of Elijah.
It’s also played out in Matthew 17:10-13. “The disciples asked Him, Then why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first? He replied, Elijah does come and will get everything restored and ready. But I tell you that Elijah has come already, and they did not know or recognize him but did to him as they liked. Also, the Son of Man is going to be treated and suffer at their hands. Then the disciples understood that He spoke to them about John the Baptist.”
John the Baptist is called the forerunner. He came before Jesus to announce Jesus’ arrival. We see this story and we put it together. From Malachi into the book of Matthew we see that Elijah’s spirit leaped over the years and landed on a young man named John the Baptist. He was born through a miracle birth by Elizabeth. You know the whole story of Mary, and all that took place.
This guy is the “show me the way” forerunner. A fact of this is that that spirit is coming again on the earth. The spirit of Elijah is coming on the earth. In the book of Acts Joel’s prophecy is quoted by Peter and he says, “God shall pour out in the last days his spirit upon all flesh and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, old men shall dream dreams, young men shall see visions.” These are the things that are coming in the last days.
God was not only telling us that on the Book of Acts was an outpouring, but he was again referring to the spirit of Elijah coming over the lands and over the nations of the world, and it is that today. We are having a refreshing pouring out of the Holy Spirit over the land. The spirit of Elijah is in that outpouring.
